Assessment, whether formative or summative, allows teachers and students a gage in which to determine prior knowledge, ongoing knowledge,

and conceptual understanding. In order to determine the level of prior knowledge, a formative assessment will include pictures of shapes and group and individual discussion of the names and properties of shapes. I will use a white board to draw a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and cylinder; asking the students, by a show of hands, the name of each shape. Next, the students will work in pairs with flashcards containing pictures of the shapes, while I walk around, quizzing each other on the names of the shapes. Also, I will work individually with students, using the same flashcards having students identify the shapes. The results from each student will be reflected on a chart with headings of prior knowledge. The summative assessment will involve worksheets, making a math penguin with shapes, the students will use a whiteboard to draw a shape which I will read to the class, the students will use shape manipulatives to make new shapes, and I will ask questions like why a triangle is a triangle. Assessment will include worksheets with content as follows: Put an X on the circle. Color the triangle red. Scribble over the rectangle. Color the oval blue

The students will make a math penguin through the use of shapes that I will model by making a penguin prior to class time. The kindergartens have a penguin mathematics mascot. Through the use of shapes to make the penguin, I will be able to assess the students understanding. I must assess through the use of the worksheets, oral representation of

shapes, and projects which students will require the topic taught through a different medium, which assists them to learn at their ZPD. Teacher Name: Rhonda Brown
