Speaking and Listening Lesson Objectives and Methods: - Students will take time to consider why language is an important

part of relationships with others. - Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of an Audio recording by answering a selection of questions. - Students will practice listening and reading with their classmates while also practicing comprehension ability. Materials and Preparation: - Recording for the Audio Activity - Handouts # ! #"! and ##. - $o no distribute handouts in advance. Allow time for e%planation. Level: &ntermediate Time: '( minutes

I. Lead-in and Introduction !" minutes# ) As the students enter! direct their attention to two question written on the board. Why is language and communication important in your life? How does it affect your relationship with friends and family? ") *nce all of the students have entered! state that they will have + minutes to reflect on the written question. ,irculate and answer any questions that the students may have. #) After the allotted time! II. $%ercise in Listening and Speaking !& minutes# ) -he teacher will then ask the students to find a partner in order to discuss their answers to the .ead-&n question. -he students will be given + minutes to talk to one another and hear what each has to say. -ell the students that after + minutes! they will each present what their partner/s answers to the question. ") &f there is an odd number of students! the teacher will partner with a student and will also answer the question. #) After + minutes! have the students each present their partner/s answers! making comments and corrections only if necessary. 0) *nce all of the students have presented! address any minor errors which could impede understanding. III. 'udio 'ctivit( )" minutes# ) -ell the students to carefully listen to the following conversation between $r. Renolds! the host! and the caller. -ell the students that they will have the chance to hear the audio more than once! and to focus only on discovering sub1ect matter on the first listen.

") 2lay the recording! and circulate. 3hile circulating! silently assess which students seem to grasp the conte%t of the conversation! and those who do not. #) After the students have listened to the recording once! distribute handout # and tell the students to write down a few words that did not understand. 2lay the recording once more! and circulate. After the recording has finished! ask students which words they wrote down. After the student has the read the word! ask the class if anyone knows what it means. &f not! answer the question. 0) $istribute handout #". -ell the students to check mark the bo% which they think is correct. 2lay the recording and circulate! monitoring to see if any students are struggling. *nce finished! correct that answers as a class! reading each question off and asking who would like to give their answer. I*. +onversations !" minutes# ) -ell the students to reform the groups which they had at the beginning of class. *nce in groups! tell them that you will be distributing two different handouts 4A and 5) for each group. -ell the students to only look at the handout that they are given! and to avoid looking at their partner/s. ") $istribute handout ## and instruct the students to choose a member that will read first. 3hile this member is reading! the other students will attempt to answer questions based on the reading. After completing this! tell the students to switch roles. 6ncourage the students to reread sections for their partner if necessary. #) ,irculate while the students are working and provide aid when necessary. 0) *nce the activity is complete! ask the students if there were any words that they did not understand! and if they particular difficulty with a certain part. *. +onclusion & minutes# ) Ask the students if they found the Audio and the handouts useful. ") Ask the students if they would like anything to be improved or clarified. #) ,ongratulate the students for workings hard! and for their progress in their language learning.
