School Profile: Lynnhaven Middle School

Principal: Dr. Violet Hoyle Assistant Principal: Mrs. Amanda Knott and Mr. Skip McLamb School History: Since its opening in 1974, Lynnhaven Middle School has served its community with great distinction in both academic and extracurricular successes. Lynnhaven currently serves some 1,200 students in grades six through eight. It employs a school-within-a-school concept, interdisciplinary teaming, and an extensive range of exploratory courses to compliment core area instruction in English, math, science and social studies. Programs focusing on seventh and eighth grade block scheduling and emotional intelligence were also implemented in 1999, while our intervention reading program continues. LMS receives students from several feeder elementary schools including Alanton, Birdneck, King's Grant, Kingston, Linkhorn Park, Seatack, and Trantwood. Upon completion of their studies here in grade eight, our students attend First Colonial and Cox High Schools or one of the many magnet programs offered by various high schools in Virginia Beach. Our 140,000 square foot physical plant sits on a twenty-five acre site just off Old Donation Parkway in close proximity to Virginia Beach General Hospital. School Mascot: Bluefish Number of Teachers and the Grades Taught: Ten sixth grade teachers, fourteen seventh grade teachers, twelve eighth grade teachers, one keyboarding teacher, one technical education teacher, four music teachers, four foreign language teachers, two teen living and career and financial skills teachers, five health and physical education teachers, one art teacher, four office staff, one student activities coordinator, one police officer, and three security assistants, Special Programs Offered: Computer Resource, Library Media, Gifted Resource, ISS Coordinator, Reading Resource, and Student Support Location Map: Located to the west of Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital, 1250 Bayne Drive is one quarter of a mile off of Old Donation Parkway on the right hand side. Ethnic diversity statistics of students: American Indian 3 students, African American 191 students, Asian 49 students, Hispanic 71 students, and Caucasian 840 students.
