Dear Lynnhaven Middle School Parents, My name is Karen Simonic. I am a senior at First Colonial High School. I have been working with your students this year as a student teacher and have greatly enjoyed the experience. I am in a course called Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow where I go over to Lynnhaven Middle School to teach with Mr. Kinzel every other day. My dream is to become a teacher. I will be attending Old Dominion University in the fall to pursue my dream. Part of my curriculm requires me to design a service learning project and to present it to my students. My service learning project goes well with the disease unit your student is studying in Health. The title of my project is Cancer Colors. My objective is to make your student aware of the many different types of cancers. I will be presenting my project on Friday, February 14th. Your student will be given a blank cancer ribbon. They will be assigned a cancer and a color. They will then use their assigned color to decorate their cancer ribbon. Then they are to create a flyer with a Did you know. fact about their assigned cancer, what the cancer is, and a fact or a statistic about their assigned cancer. In addition, Mr. Kinzel and I have come up with a memory game of all of the cancers and a fact about them. The students will work together to finish the memory game. Please encourage your child to wear their colored cancer ribbon on Tuesday, February 18th. Attached is a list of the cancers that will be assigned to the students.
