Quote Analysis
Sometimes what a character says (and how he says it) is just as important as what
happens in the story. It can tell us a lot about the character’s personality, and about his
or her relationship with other characters in the story. You can explain a lot about a
story using quote analysis.

Instructions:
1. Quote: Find the quote in the text. Read it in context.
2. Context: Explain who said it? To whom? When? Where?
3. Paraphrase: Explain what the speaker is saying in your own words to make the meaning
clearer. Give the reference.
4. Characterization: Explain what this quote tells you about the character. What kind of person
would say these things? Why would they say it? What would they have to know, or be
thinking about, to say it? What does it show about their relationships with other characters?

Example:
Quote: “So then what do my responsible parents do? They make sure I’m asleep and they leave.
Because so many other things are really important.” (TNS, p.32-33)
Bobby says it to his father. He says it when his father calls Bobby
