Artifact: Reflection on the unapparent diversity in a seemly homogenous classroom Date: December 2013 Topic: Understanding how some

practices may disadvantage certain groups of learners Description of the learning experience: Introduced students to the matter unit in science Documented students ideas on things considered to be matter Assigned students to small group activity to apply their knowledge Professional Standards: Professional Practice: Refine professional practice through reflection Commitment to Students and Student Learning: Sensitive to factors that influence individual student learning. Care: Commitment to students well-being and learning through professional judgment What I learned from this experience: The majority voice may not be necessarily representative of the entire class population Some individuals making up a minority may not feel safe speaking up In my classroom programming, I will: Ensure everyone has a voice; I will ask those students who have already spoken to let others have a turn Approach those students who do not usually speak up, during independent work time, to ask if they have anything to say
