Inexpensive and Eco-friendly Synthesis of Schiff bases

Amresh Baitha, K.C.College, amreshkumar112@gmail.com Abstract The reaction of primary aromatic amines with aryl aldehydes is found to be catalyzed by lemon juice and Calcined egg shell (CES) under solvent-free conditions [1] to give the corresponding Schiff bases in good yields. The catalyst used in this method is cheaply available. It is quicker method because it involves use of microwave. This eco-friendly reaction has many advantages like economical, mild reaction conditions and simple work-up with high yield. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activity. Keywords: Schiff base, imines, lemon juice, CES, Antimicrobial activity.
