Topic Selected Earth Science Weathering and Erosion Curriculum Standard Addressed MS-ESS2-2 Construct an explanation based on evidence

Lesson Objectives - Students will investigate how sand can be made from larger rocks. Connection to Student Background Knowledge Prior knowledge to rock cycle and the process of weathering in previous grades. Assessment for lesson objectives Informal assessment through observation, student participation, and exit slips. Model(s) of instruction used I will build background knowledge and lead up to the question: which came first sand or sandstone? This will then lead into discussion which will lead to introducing the activity. Students will come up with a plan to make sand from granite rock pieces and proceed to carry out the plan. Level of Understanding (e.g. Blooms Taxonomy) Knowledge, Analysis, and Application Differentiated Instruction Focus students will partner up with a high level academic student to complete this activity.

Reading Strategy Reading material provided by the social studies teacher will be read which will lead into a review discussion; jumping starting the lesson. Technology Use LCD Projector, computer. Community Resources Granite pieces given to me by the 6th grade science teacher. Materials LCD projector, computer, granite rock pieces, student lab notebooks, variety of resources students can use to carry out their plans such as plastic containers, glass containers, water, etc.
