During this lesson the students will demonstrate that they know and understand how to use the order of operations. The order of operations is a building block of mathematics that the students must know in order further their knowledge in the subject. By the end of this lesson the students creation will demonstrate their comprehension of the subject. During this lesson the students will use their free www.toondoo.com account to create an original four-panel comic strip. First the teacher will review how to use www.toondoo.com with the students, explain the assignment, and show the students the exemplar. Once the students are comfortable with the website they will independently use the website to create their own four-panel cartoon that demonstrates their knowledge of SOL 6.8. We will have reviewed the material covering this SOL prior to this class. The cartoon strip must incorporate an original mnemonic aid to help them remember the order of operations, i.e. Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. The cartoon strip must also show how to solve an original whole number numerical expression that involves parentheses, exponents, multiplication or division, and addition or subtraction. The students will be able to ask the teacher questions and refer to their notes throughout the assignment. Once the students are done they will post a link of their cartoon to the class webpage. The teacher will use the students comic strip to assess the students ability to evaluate whole number expressions using the order of operations.
