Lesson Plan 8- Day 5

Area of Focus: Mathematics Core Content Area (use Common Core Standards) = CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object. CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which has more of/less of the attribute, and describe the differences. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter. CCSS.Math.K.MD.B.3 Classify objects into given categories, count the numbers of the objects in each category and sort the categories by count.

Student Objectives (what should students know and be able to do): Students should be able to compare two or more objects by length or weight. Students should be able to identify measurable attributes of an object. Students should be able to measure objects using non-standard measurements and compare two or more objects (longest, shortest) Students should be able to graph data in correlation with classifying objects into categories. Students should be able to articulate knowledge of measurement and data.

Teaching Procedure Direct/Large group instruction will be used for beginning of lesson, class discussion, examples, and directions. . Small group/individual instruction will be used as students complete tasks. One on one instruction will be given in small group format when student are at station located at teacher table. Reading Strategy Blending- students should blend together individual letter sounds to make a whole word. Picture clues- students should use picture clues when available

Introduction (how will you gain attention, set mood, establish purpose, make ground rules, and provide vocabulary for lesson): Hocus Pocus Everybody Focus Invite students into lesson by asking them to have a seat on the carpet. Remind students of Give me Five (Ears open, be still, hands free, be quiet, eyes on speaker) rules and ask for watching eyes and listening ears.

Review Vocabulary- Measurement, length, sort, graph, data

Pre-Assessment (what informal/formal assessment will you use to gauge where the students are before the lesson begins/may include a rubric) Class discussion over previous lesson. Ask questions to gage understanding from previous lesson. Review any concepts students seem to be struggling with.

Development Read this weeks reading street story, Seeds Connect the story with the days activity and explain that students will be using seeds and beans to complete different measurement activities. Show the class the beans and sunflower seeds so they have an understanding of them. Reactivate knowledge on our seed compare activity. Give instructions on two different group activities and explain that each group will be working independently at their own seats. Group 1- Measuring in beans Group 2- Measuring in sunflower seeds Release students to their desks Each group has 15 minutes to complete each activity. Instruct student that if they finish before time is up they can brainstorm other items that can be measured and/ draw a picture on the back that can be measured.

Conclusion (how will students show what they learned then end with a calming activity): Collect papers and regroup for class discussion Ask students to share what they learned.

Post Assessment Informal assessment is based on understanding of lesson during class discussion and questioning. Formal assessment is based on pages collected from centers. Multiple Intelligences/Differentiated Instruction (place an x by each one covered in the lesson): Spatial (ability to visualize) Linguistic (words/spoken/written) Logical-mathematical Kinesthetic(movement) Musical Interpersonal (interaction w/others) Intrapersonal (self-reflective ability) Naturalist (having to do w/nature) _x__ __x_ _x__ ___ _x__ _x__ _x__ __x_

Blooms Taxonomy/Differentiated Instruction (place an x by each of the items that apply): _x__ Knowledge (tell, list, define, label, recite, memorize, repeat, find, name, record, fill in, recall) __x_ Comprehension (locate, explain, summarize, identify, describe, report, discuss, review, show) __x_ Application (demonstrate, construct, record, illustrate, research, order, display, practice)

_x__ Analysis (compare, contrast, classify, critique, solve, experiment, examine, infer, categorize) _x__ Evaluation (judge, predict, verify, rate, determine, decide, choose, forecast, estimate, prioritize) _x__ Synthesis (compose, hypothesize, design, formulate, create, invent, develop, refine, produce) Special Needs

Gifted Learners: None needed Learners Below Level: Extra one on one instruction will be available during small group activities. Para will be available during full duration of lesson. Learners w/ Behavior Issues: Extra one on one instruction will be available during small group activities. Para will be available during full duration of lesson. Technology. Smart board and lady bug will be used to demonstrate activity and to display student results as we discuss them at the end. IPad will be used to video tape the lesson. Community Resourceo Help from family member was utilized to help put together bean and sunflower seeds rulers.
