Spring 2010

Instructors:

What is Developmental Neurobiology?

The science of Developmental Neurobiology encompasses the study
of brain development across different animal taxa, at all levels of
analysis from molecular to cellular to organismal.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to fundamental

aspects of neural and behavioral development, from molecular to
organismal levels, including consideration of questions such as:
• What is the role of differential gene expression in regulation of
brain development?
• How do stem cells give rise to neurons with specific cellular
fates?
• How does the brain get wired up correctly during development?
• How do genetics and experience interact to specify neural
circuits and behavior?
• How do disorders in developmental processes lead to neural
defects and disease?

You will learn to evaluate scientific data and think critically, and to
express your ideas both verbally and in writing. These are skills that
will last you a lifetime.

Pre-requisite: BISC 220L/320L (you do not need to have taken BISC 421)
