New Capstone! Computer-Mediated Communication By Betsy Sullivan 14 A new communication capstone, created and taught by Dr.

Stephanie Ahlfeldt will be offered spring semester. Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) is the examination of communication involving technology as the medium in various communication contexts. The course will involve an experiential component, with the service-oriented use of CMC. CMC is a newer research area in the field of communication and involves many disciplinary perspectives including relational, organizational, health, political, instructional and other areas of communication study. Topics to be covered in the course include ethics, online identity, online communities, interpersonal attraction, antisocial behavior, and global village. CMC is a personal interest of study for Dr. Ahlfeldt and she has previous experience with teaching a credo course about the use of technology in communication. The course will allow students to critically examine the role of technology in their lives while drawing on a variety of theoretical perspectives they have studied for their major, said Dr. Ahlfeldt. The course will require students to draw on multiple courses and areas of study and to synthesize information while applying that knowledge with social engagement. The course will be taught every spring, beginning next semester. Other Capstones that will be taught this spring include Health Communication taught by Cindy-Larson Casselton and Intercultural Communication taught by Hank Tkachuk. Capstones that will be offered next year include Documentary and Historical Film with Don Rice and Integrated Marketing Communications with Kirsten Theye.
