hen teaching about cause and effect, I incorporated a book about Volcanos. By doing this I made a real world connection between cause and effects

and Mother Nature. As a class we discussed all the different causes and effects of Volcanos. Once we were finished discussing, students broke off into pairs of twos and completed a T-chart that was labeled with Cause on one side and Effect on the other. The following days students comprised a rough draft and a final draft. In this rough draft students were to have an introduction sentence, three-body sentence and a closing sentence. Once complete students were to peer edit and revise. As an incentive to do a spectacular job on their paragraph students were told they would be able to go as a class to the computer lab. During the computer lab time students would be able to type up their final draft. Rather than using a regular plainJane Word document I had my students type their paragraph in a PowerPoint slide. By doing this students were able to add moving graphics and were able to utilize a few other tricks I taught them.

This proved to be a fantastic way to get students excited about writing along with improving their computer skills.
