One of the main themes in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is the making of the individual.

Throughout the book the notion of the individual versus society is explored, and the reader is shown the different the many different perspectives of the human race. For example: We know Scout wears overalls, and fights, these actions are representative of who she feels she is. These habits are challenged though by many of the women in her life who feel such behavior is unbecoming. In Chapter 8 of the novel, a small amount of snow falls on Macomb County. Jem and Scout take this opportunity to build themselves their first snowman. Although there is not enough snow, the two gather mud and build the snowman in a somewhat mocking way to look like their neighbor Mr. Avery. This portrayal shows the way in which reputations may form in the public eye. The snowman itself is a symbol as well, each of its pieces although not all snowcoming together to create a whole being. Your Assignment: I. You will make a physical outline of one of the characters weve encountered in the book up to this point. Taking magazine clippings, newspaper clippings, small items, printed images, your own drawings, etc. you will fill this person, and show us, what makes them who they are? Around the body create society as the person may see it. Do the pieces that create your character agree with the world around her/him? Are there pieces of the outside world that clash with who your character inherently is? II. Once your character outline is complete, compose a one page, single space, typed paper in which you explain and rationalize five of the items you chose for your character. You must select two quotes/scenarios (must cite) from the novel to show evidence for your decision. Requirements Must have 10-15 pieces all togetherpieces must be split between the character and the world surrounding them. You may not simply just color in the outline and turn it in; you must create a mosaic of sorts showing us who your character is. Paper must be 12-size font, single space, Times New Roman. I will try to secure library time, if typing the paper is an issue, please see me.
