Thania Lemus Prof. Topf English 114B 10 March 2013 Journal #5 Vocab: 1.

Herding: to conduct or drive (a group of people) to a destination. 2. Marauding: engaged in raiding for plunder, especially roaming about and ravaging an area. 3. Writhing: to twist the body about, or squirm, as in pain, violent effort, etc. Critical questions: 1. What do you think the status of the cure is and where is it headed? 2. Why do you think that John thinks about the blond once more? What is the meaning behind her? 3. Do you think John will die because of his new job as an end specialist? Why? 4. Will John ever find serenity? Why or why not? 5. What is the importance of the amount of interviews there is in this section? Does it have an impact on what is going on? Does it add credibility? Quotes: 1. When youve served in the army for as long as I have, it becomes clear that you are not really serving for your country, but that you are serving the very small group of men who control that country. This quote stands out to me because with all the riots and the cure people are getting there is now a distinct hierarchy. 2. Anyone who was too old or too sick to be of use, particularly if he or she had gotten the cure, was considered a drag on the nations future. At first we were ordered to shoot them. After the cure being seen as a normal thing, it has become something of negative connotation. 3. Go ahead and carve it again, I told him. I dont care. This makes me think that the society people are living in is hell, and its getting worse by the minute. 4. We walked with him into the basin, and I could see the surface of the earth, drained. I could see the little ridges in the sand, like the surface of a crater on some distant old planeta crater that was once a great sea, now dead forever. This shows how living for a long time wastes resources and now there is no beautiful earth. 5. I knew a losing bet when I saw one. When his son dared him, John seems to already know that he will not find serenity now that he has the cure.
