Romania - List of Champions

Only since 1921/22 a truly national championship was played for, involving the r
egional champions from most parts of the country (though the regions around Cern
auti (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine) and Chisinau (now the independent republic of Mol
dova) only joined in the mid-20s).
Before, various cup tournaments were played involving clubs from Bucuresti, Ploi
esti and occasionally Craiova, all south of the Carpathians. Note that until the
end of World War I, Transylvania was part of the Habsburg Empire and ruled from
Budapest.
The criteria according to which these tournaments prior to 1921 (most of which w
ere never completely finished) are considered national championships are not ent
irely clear; see links to the individual seasons for details.
