While at NWCTA I had the opportunity to meet my students

parents during the Bring Your Parent to School Week.

Initially I was concerned with how parents would react to me
being in the classroom and having total control. Since my CT
was chosen as the 2014 teacher of the year for the state of
Nevada I felt that parents would prefer to see him in the
classroom instead of me. However, regardless of that, this
experience was positive. Parents were very engaged in the
classroom. I introduced myself to each parent before class
began and when class ended I received positive feedback
from a couple of them. Parents sat next to their children, did
the class work with their children, participated in discussion
and even asked questions. Moreover, I did my Harlem
Renaissance lesson during this week and I had parents
dance to the Charleston as well.
Furthermore, I also communicated with parents when they had concerns about their
childs success in the class. I attended four Section 504 meetings and one IEP meeting.
To these meetings I brought the students grade sheet, informed parents about their
childs progress in the class and then followed through with the accommodations set in
the meeting. When students were absent for long periods of time they had the option of
going to the class EDMODO page and receive their assignments from there. After the
school day was over I would upload the days assignment on EDMODO therefore making
the assignments available to the students. In addition, I was in contact through email with
the school counselors. The counselors would contact me whenever a parent wanted to
speak to me or when parents had questions about their children. On some occasions I
was able to call parents and on other occasions I made contact with parents through the
counselors.
