Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 1: PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development
knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and
of multiple interacting influences on childrens development and learning, to create
environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child. (NAEYC,
2010)
,
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the fall semester, as part of my ECED 120-Child Growth and Development
course, I worked individually on a research paper over Erik Erikson and his stages of multiple
influences of development. The paper displayed how I have advanced through most of the stages
of growth and development. The paper required me to do research on Erikson and compare
information about my life experiences to see if I successfully completed each stage.

Analysis of What I Learned:
Through completion of this research paper, I was able to reveal the way I went through
each stage of development and learn if there were any stages not completed. I learned that many
people are in their right stage according to their age, but since each child learns differently some
have passed that stage or have just moved on. It is okay if you are behind, you just learn a little
slower than others.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
As caregivers further their education, attend trainings, and establish working experiences;
we learn that a child learns, grows, understands, and develops at different rates. Each child will
grow and expand on his/her skills through the teaching, challenges, experiences, and knowledge
of the caregivers. Caregivers who focus on the needs of the child will help support positive
interactions and exploration as they develop.
