Cedar View Elementary (4-5)

Fractions

Standard:
o EE4.NF.3 Differentiate between whole, half, and fourth.

Objective (Learning Target):
o I can write the fraction (part and whole) using a numerator and denominator after looking
at Legos.

Materials:
o White boards and markers
o Elmo
o Legos (Individual bags)
o Worksheet (See attached)

Procedure:
1. Introduce I can statement with the students.
2. By using Legos, I will show the students that the whole Lego has 4 parts. This is
the denominator (the bottom number).
3. Again with the Legos, I will show the students the various parts that we can use to
show the part that is covered ( , , ). This is the numerator (top number).
4. I will check for their understanding by using their white boards (showing the faction
with the Legos and asking that they write it) and then by providing the students with
the Legos to create the fraction I provide to them.
5. The students will each be given a worksheet to complete based on the fractions that
we discuss.
6. When they are finished, they can do their tubs and flashcards with a partner.

Check for Understanding:
o I will check the students work when they write the fraction on their white board. I will
gather an informal assessment through that.
o I will also check for the students understanding when I ask them to build various
fractions with Legos.
o After looking at their worksheet, I will be able to determine if the students understand
the material.

Closure:
I will refer back to our learning target by building a Lego fraction and asking the students
to tell me the fraction on the way to get their things for lunch (verbal exit card).
