6. a) Almost everyone has had the unpleasant experience of a mosquito bite. An allergic reaction
to the mosquito bits saliva causes severe skin irritation such as red bumps and itching.
Transmission of certain serious diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, and several forms of
encephalitis are a more serious consequence. Mosquitoes carry diseases that afflict humans as
well as transmit several diseases and parasites susceptible to dogs and horses. All of the almost
200 species of mosquitoes in the US live in specific habitats, exhibit unique behaviors, and bite
different types of animals. Despite these differences, all mosquitoes share some common traits,
such as a four-stage life cycle. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs directly on the surface of
stagnant water, in a depression, or on the edge of a container where rainwater may collect and
flood the eggs after she obtains a blood meal (male mosquitoes do not bite). Mosquito larvae, or
wigglers, emerge when the eggs hatch. The larvae feed and develop into the third stage of the
life cycle, called pupae, or tumblers, while living in the water. The pupae also live in the water,
but no longer feed. Finally, the mosquitoes emerge from their pupae case and the water, ready to
bite as fully developed adults.
c) Insect repellants are available in various forms and concentrations. Aerosol and spray
products are intended for skin applications as well as for treating clothing. Direct skin
application is enabled by liquid, cream, lotion, spray, and stick products. Where exposure to
insects is minimal, products with a low concentration of the active ingredient may be appropriate.
For highly infested areas, or with insect species that are more difficult to repel, a higher
concentration of the active ingredient may be useful. Consider nonchemical ways to deter biting
insects- screens, netting, long-sleeves, and slacks, where appropriate.
