T

an Delta (or loss angle) is a diagnostic

measurement used to determine the
condition of insulation in many kinds of
high voltage equipment. The tangent of
the angle delta is the ratio of the capaci-
tive charging current to the resistive loss
current. This can be measured using a
bridge circuit and a standard capacitor or
by accurately measuring the phase angle
between the applied voltage and the
resulting current. For a purely capacitive
load this phase angle will be 90 degrees
and for a purely resistive load this will be
0 degrees. For an insulator the capacitive
component will dominate.
CALIBRATION
HVDSA equipment requires yearly
calibration. Agents should contact their
customers to ensure that equipment is
kept correctly calibrated.
FIRMWARE
All distributors are encouraged to
contact their customers to ensure that
their equipment is loaded with the
latest firmware. Firmware is specific to
hardware versions so it is important to
get the serial number to check which
firmware revision is appropriate. Incorrect
firmware can damage hardware.
