Mars Mission

Category: Electromagnetic
Vehicle type: Orbiter and lander. Both carry sensors that detect in a wide range of
the electromagnetic spectrum.
Vehicle landing site: Valles Marineris, since no human spacecraft have ever
landed there.
Vehicle mission: As Valles Marineris is several kilometers wide and deep in some
spots, it is likely that there will be huge temperature differences between different
levels in the valley. Our mission is to map out such weather patterns in the valley,
and see how they affect the weather on Mars as a whole.
Communication between the Mars orbiter and lander will be via short-wave radio,
so both the lander and orbiter will have radio frequency sensors. Both craft will
also have on-board visible-light cameras to relay in real(-ish) time the exploration
of the Martian surface from above and on the ground.
On the lander, there will be an IR sensor to detect differences in heat within Valles
Marineris.
