To begin this activity . will read the story *Teddy Bears Picnic+ during circle time . will also e/plain to
the children that at the end of the wee( we are going to have a real Teddy Bears picnic where we will
have a picnic lunch outside with our teddy bears and families
0uring our circle time discussion . will as( the children if they (now what bears eat 1e will discuss that
bears eat some of the same thing that we eat such as berries and fish . will also as( the children if they
have ever seen a real bear or see a bear loo(ing through garbage cans for food
To create an interest in this activity . will as( the children if they have ever gone on a picnic with their
families . will as( what they have eaten on picnics or what types of food that they would li(e to eat at a
picnic . will also introduce the children to the song Teddy Bears Picnic
To introduce the materials2 . plan to have the children bring their teddy bears to circle time for the story
. will have the supplies close to me and at the end of the story2 . will show the children the picnic bas(et2
the food that is available in the bas(et !the children may add to it'2 and the blan(et to sit on and spread
out the supplies
The s(ill that may need to be demonstrated is how to spread out the blan(et and picnic supplies for the
children who have never been on a picnic before This will give the children one idea of how to proceed
with a picnic
There are no real safety issues that would need to be addressed . would want to remind the children of
the *3olden 4ule+ . would say that *we need to respect each other and our individual teddy bears+ To
guide the children into the activity . would say2 *5et6s set up our picnic+
1hen . suggest we set up the picnic . would have the children ta(e the blan(et and help set it out flat on
the floor 7e/t . will have them place their bears on the blan(et2 ta(e out the supplies and have the
children come up with ways that they can all be involved with the planning of their picnic

in groups of two so that all the children are engaged and have ;obs to do in setting up the picnic <nce

<ther materials that will be on hand will be the materials in the dramatic play area . will also have a %0
player with a copy of *Teddy Bears Picnic+ so that the children can play the song for the picnic if they
wish The children will also be encouraged to use supplies for the other centers to facilitate and e/tend
the activity

To end this activity . will give the children a five minute warning that the activity is ending . will begin
the clean-up song
. will involve the children in the clean-up process by instructing them that we need to put the dishes2 and
food supplies bac( in the dramatic play area . will instruct them to leave the blan(et spread out on the
floor so we can have a picnic snac( time The children will also be instructed to put any other supplies
form other areas of the room away
:s the children finish cleaning up the picnic activity2 they will be instructed to come bac( over to the
blan(et The children will be as(ed to wash their hands in small groups :s the children get finished
washing their hands they will find their bears and sit down on the blan(et %hildren will be served snac(
family style

The snac( will be berries that bears may eat So the children will have the opportunity to taste and smell
some of the same types of food that real bears would eat

the wee( Teddy Bears Picnic when parents are invited to ;oin
The children will be able to reflect on this activity throughout the wee( by dictating their e/perience in
the activity to the teacher as she writes it in the child6s ;ournal The children may wish to tell a story that
they want the children may want the teacher to write out for them
The children will also have the opportunity to reflect on their e/periences by reading the boo( *Teddy
Bears Picnic+ and comparing that to the picnic activity in class
The children will also have the opportunity to reflect bac( on this activity during the wee( as they
recreate a picnic in the dramatic play area2 they may choose to recreate part of the activity in other areas
of the room They may wish to create a play2 dance or a song about the activity
