Sample methodology for teaching pronunciation, listening, grammar, reading

1. Pronunciation
Elements to be covered:
Individual sounds & phonetics
26 letters but 44 sounds - vowel & consonant sounds: Show symbols of some simple words, watch
videos & practice making the sounds in a sentence.
How we make the sounds -
Unvoiced and voiced: putting hands over ears while making the sounds to hear the difference
between them.
plosives like /b/ & /p/: putting lips in position to make the sound but not making it. Try to breathe
fricatives like /f/ & /v/: taking a deep breath & holding the sound
nasals like /m/ & /n/: taking a deep breath & holding the sound
Word stress -
Show examples of different words & demonstrate syllables - eg 'Teacher', 'Computer'
How incorrect stress can make the word difficult to understand eg 'Comfortable', 'Vegetable'
Write exercises to practice putting words with the same number of stressed syllables in different
columns
Sentence stress & rhythm
Importance of this in natural speech. Demonstrate that important words are stressed with simple
sentences eg 'He LIVES in the HOUSE on the CORNER'
How meaning can be changed by stressing different words eg 'I ASKED you to buy flowers' 'I asked
you to buy FLOWERS'
Write exercises to practice, then get students to practice speaking
Non-verbal cues are also important - students to be encouraged to be dramatic
Intonation
Rising after yes/no questions, falling after other questions etc
Linking words
How words link to make it easier to say them: eg 'an_ orange'
Adding sounds: eg ' Do(w) it now'
Silent letters: eg 'Chris(t)mas'
Dropping letters: eg ' Where is (h)e? '
Schwa: ' How do you do? '

2. Speaking
Conversation skills - give students tasks to work together so they can practice listening and speaking
in turn
