Although a controversial topic, I
believe that it is important to educate
students about different family
structures such as same-sex families.
This not only promotes peer
acceptance for those who come from
non-traditional family backgrounds
but also educate students on current
social trends (McGraw-Hill Companies,
2005). It is important not to shield
students from real life experiences.
How are they to learn and develop
lifelong skills when they are protected
from society? I view my students as
the agentic child, I see them as
capable adults-in-training ready to
learn all aspects of life (Sorin, 2003, p.
19).
