Hands On Activities Teacher Notes Year

Straw Polygons Using straws cut into lengths of 2, 4 and 6 centimetres, along
with pipe cleaners cut in 3 centimetre pieces. Students are to
make their own polygons with sides of various lengths. Students
have to write the formula and answers into their math
workbooks. In order to make different shape polygons slide the
pipe cleaners into the straws.
Engagement activity Introducing the concept of
perimeter.
Rotational activity during Numeracy rotations.
Extension ask students to work out the area of their
polygons they have created.

Year 4
Compare the areas of regular and irregular shapes by informal means -
ACMMG087
Compare objects using familiar metric units of area and volume - ACMMG290
Year 5
Calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles using familiar metric units -
ACMMG109

Using Maths Cubes When students knowledge of perimeter is quiet solid. The
concept of Area is introduced. Using connecting cubes or Lego
is great ways to have students create closed shapes that can be
used to introduce area.
The square-shaped blocks help students understand the notion
of square units as we calculate the total number of blocks, or
area, of their shape.

Engagement activity Introducing the concept of
perimeter.
Rotational activity during Numeracy rotations.

Tip: Store blocks into plastic
sandwich bags that contain
36 units. Students can then
grab a bag. Saving time.
