M o b i l e K i n g O f B u r g e r s ( M o b i l e B u r g e r K i n g ) 1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem
Research the problem Develop solutions Select the best solution Construct a prototype
Test and evaluate
Communicate the solutions Redesign Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 1 Identify the problem
Write down the original problem here. Student To create a robot that will be able to maneuver with a full range of vision in every direction, while sending back a live feed to the controller.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1 http://bricks.stackexchange.com/questions/1195/ca n-i-control-2-nxt-bricks-from-a-computer-using- bluetooth-at-the-same-time Site 2 www.nxtprograms.com/NXT2/3- motor_chassis/steps.html Site 3 http://www.robotc.net/wiki/Setting_up_Bluetooth_fo r_NXT
What did you learn from your research? A How to control multiple NXT bricks at the same time B How to make a simple 3 motor chasis C How to connect our robot to the computer through blue tooth
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.
1. 2 Brains for the NXT
2. One spinning motor and a moving platform for the camera
3. Controlling the brains through a computer. Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment.
Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your first prototype will look like.
Our robot will have a three wheel chassis, two wheels will be connected to motors and the other one will be free rotating to allow for better maneuverability. The camera will be attached to the back and controlled by our second NXT brain. The two brains will be stacked atop each other and secured from the sides. Step 5 Construct a prototype Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a computer program for your robot. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs. 1st Prototype Step 5 evidence Step 6 Test and Evaluate the solution(s) 1. Does your robot work? Somewhat 2. Did it perform as expected? Nah 3. What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? Add the second brain 4. Does it meet the original design constraints? Yes 5. Is it safe? SUREEEE 6. Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project.
