Handout
Reciprocal
For every real number there exists a number
called its reciprocal or multiplicative
inverse.

– Reciprocal of a is 1/a (a ≠ 0)
Ex: -8 and ⅛

– Reciprocal of a/b is b/a (a ≠ 0, b ≠ 0)

Ex: -⅔ and -3/2
Division Rule
• To divide a number a by a nonzero
number b, multiply a by the reciprocal of b.

a ÷ b = a ∙ 1/b

Example: -1 ÷ 3 = -1 ∙ ⅓ = - ⅓

The Sign of a Quotient
• The quotient of two numbers with the
same sign is positive.
-a ÷ (-b) = a/b
Example -20 ÷ (-4) = 5
• The quotient of two numbers with the
opposite signs is negative.
-a ÷ b = -a/b
