Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Fauvism:
Fauvism was introduced by Henri Matisse and Andr Derain in the early twentieth century. Matisse and Derain had experimented together with bright colors and vivid brushstrokes on the Mediterranean coast and began a movement that was one of the rst to break with Impressionism as well as other methods of perception. An art critic, Louis Vauxcelles, referred to the artists as "Fauves" (wild beasts) for their wild brushstrokes, and the term "Fauvism" was coined. Fauvism is often compared to German Expressionism, through emotion is more so expressed in Fauvism. Artists of this period include Maurice de Valminck, Kees Van Dongen, Charles Camoin, and Jean Puy.
