ART HISTORY TIMELINE: FINAL ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT 2014

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Caroline Coady

Romanticism:

"Romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor in exact truth, but in a way of
feeling." wrote Charles Baudelaire (1821 - 67) about this art form. It is considered nearly impossible to
give a denition to what Romanticism is, because it's paintings depict a wide variety of di"erent
subjects, styles, and techniques. However, many of these subjects are usually non-physical, complex
things such as the ideas of liberty or justice. Romantic paintings often express raw emotion and/or
are designed to elicit that emotion from the viewer. Romantic paintings also tend to glorify nature and
depict humans as small and weak, unable to control the natural world around them. Some well-
known artists from this period were Thomas Girtin, Horace Vernet, and Edwin Landseer.
