Re: Self Evaluation Letter

Dear Ms. Oberg,

Many of the high school graduate students are not prepared for college even if they are
accepted. They have never studied the skills needed for college-level during high school.
Also the media, colleges, and policymakers are ignoring some students who are struggling in
college and cant graduate from there even though there are some good solutions for them.
They only concern and worry more about a few smart elite students who can easily enter and
achieve in prestigious college. We have to focus on plenty of motivated, hard working average
students who can contribute to our national economy when we compete with some developed
countries.
I agree with this part of Colvins opinion.

I think I am well being prepared for college at AMES. They are teaching me how to work hard
and teachers always help me whenever I need their guide. But the one problem of Ames is not
every class makes students being prepared for college. Some class teaches college-level skills but
some does not. The necessary things that Colvin considered in this article are college-level math
skills, text, and analytical writing. In my case, I think I get lots of helps from English class
because we write the response of books that we read in the class and the teacher teaches us how
to write essays more accurate. We are learning basic level of college writing skills now and it is
so helpful to me.

I believe AMES is offering all the help they can give for the students. The important thing is the
school cannot spoon feed individual student all the time.

I have to be prepared for taking SAT and ACT and having good scores. I need to be trained to
read faster and write analytically. I am told to read articles in the newspaper or magazine. I have
to be familiar with current issues in order to jump into classroom discussions in college. In every
subject critical thinking is the most important part of learning. Reading will help a great deal for
critical thinking.

Sincerely,
