Composite hollow insulators are consisting of a load-bearing insulating tube
made of resin impregnated fibres, a housing (outside the insulating tube)
made of elastomeric material (for example silicone) and metal fixing devices at the ends of the insulating tube. They are intended for use in high voltage electrical equipment. Silicone rubber has the ability to transfer its water-repellent properties into pollution layers which cover the surface. This eliminates the need for maintenance or cleaning of the high voltage apparatuses in polluted environments. Expensive solutions normally used for porcelain, such as cleaning, greasing or coating, can be avoided.
