Data Analysis
A Glutathione Reductase Assay was used to determine the glutathione reductase activity in all treatment groups for all five cultivars. The glutathione reductase activity recorded in the assay was
relatively close to the standard amount, and so that verified that the assay kit was working. Unusually high amounts of absorbance and glutathione reductase activity were reported in the
SURES-1 cultivar exposed to 100 Pb in the crude run. The assay kit states that the initial absorbance levels should not be above 1.2 or below 0.5, and the SURES-1 cultivar exposed to 100 Pb had
an initial absorbance of 3.849. An explanation for this unreasonably high absorbance is that the sample solution was foggy, and had residue from the seedling clogging the sample. The filtered
run was then performed on the SURES-1 cultivar treatment groups to test this theory. The filtered run demonstrated low glutathione reductase activity in the live plant tissue obtained from the
Arabidopsis. A explanation for the lower results is that the filter destroyed some of the enzymes in the process, and so leaving lower results. However, the 100 Pb had a starting absorbance of
0.772 , which is an acceptable starting absorbance according to the assay. The SURES-1 seedling exposed to 100 Pb-EDTA demonstrated significantly higher results when filtered. The other cul-
tivars demonstrated similar results for the crude run, however, the filtered run was only performed on the SURES-1 cultivar. When the live Arabidopsis plant tissue was filtered the glutathione
reductase activity was significantly lower. An explanation for this, is that during the filtration, some of the enzymes in the plant were destroyed. If further trials are done, it is recommended that
live tissue is not filtered. Nevertheless, an assay kit like this requires countless trials to obtain accurate results so more trials are necessary. However, the data demonstrates in both the crude and
the filtered runs that seedlings grown in EDTA did have higher levels of glutathione reductase activity giving reason to further research into this experiment and theory.
