KWHL Follow Up Activities

1. How will the KWHL Chart be presented in the classroom? Circle Time? Small Group
Activity? Tell the name of the specific activity. The KWHL chart will be presented during
Circle Time (Large Group) at both the beginning of the week (as activity 1 on the lesson
plan) when introducing the theme on zoo animals, and at the end of the week (as activity 5 on
the lesson plan) to end our theme.

2. What take home activity will be used to encourage parent involvement? (This activity
should be mentioned in your parent letter): The take home activity used to encourage
parent involvement which was sent home in a parent letter prior to beginning our theme on
zoo animals was one of two things. The first thing the parents could do was read a book
about the zoo to their child and the second was to help their child find a zoo animal that starts
with the first letter of his/her name.

3. Specify two specific small group activities that will be used to follow up the W portion
of the KWHL chart. Tell the names of the specific activities and state what you will be
doing. The first small group activity that will be used to follow up the W portion of the
KWHL Chart will be a science activity called Fun with Measuring. The children will use
linking chains in different colors and shapes to not only measure birds in a book (Inch by
Inch by Leo Lionni) but they will use the linking chains to measure their own bodies (arms,
heightetc.). The children will be able to identify different shapes, sort shapes by color and
size, and compare differences in the lengths after completing this activity. The second small
group activity that will be used to follow up the W portion of the KWHL Chart will be a
science activity called Fun with Blubber. The children will learn that both penguins and
polar bears have blubber underneath their skin to keep them warm, by taking turns putting
one hand in a baggie with Crisco and one hand without Crisco in ice water to see which hand
feels colder. After completing this activity, the children will be able to distinguish the
difference between warm and cold.
