Title of Lesson or Activity: Storyboards and Number Combinations

Objectives:
1. Students will identify number combinations up to 10.
2. Students will identify the number objects in a set by adding 2 sets of objects together that
equal 10 or less.
Standards of Learning:
1. K.6 The student will model adding and subtracting whole numbers, using up to 10
concrete objects.
Materials:
Whiteboards
Whiteboard makers
Whiteboard erasers
Pipe cleaners
Pony beads
Procedure:
During math, I will have three different groups, and I have differentiated what they will
be doing based on their level. Each group is group by ability level with a low, middle, and high
group. I am going to write the procedure for each groups activity based on the level of the
group.
Low: I will have the storyboard in the middle of the circle. I will put a certain number of
pigs on the board, equaling no more than 10. I will ask questions like How many pigs
are outside the barn?, How many pigs are inside the barn?, and How many pigs do
we have altogether?. I will give them many different examples.
Middle/High: I will have worksheets set up to use pipe cleaners and pony beads to make
number combinations. The students will continue to find different ways of make 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9, and 10. This time they will each have a pipe cleaner and 2 different colors of pony
beads. They will use their pipe cleaners to build the different ways to make 4, 5, 6, etc.
They will record these responses on their sheets. They will work on these all the way up
to 10. The middle group will try it with partners. If they cannot get their work done, they
will have to work alone. The top group will also try working with partners for this.
Again, if there are issues getting the work done, they will have to work independently.
Differentiation Strategies:
As labeled above, I have differentiated the activities based on ability level.
Assessment:
Informal assessment through observation of students counting and sorting.
Their recorded sheets where they have colored the beads and numbers on their papers.
