Lesson Plan

Teacher: Anne Croxton Grade: Kindergarten

Date: 4/1/2014 Subject: Math Time Frame: 11:00-11:30
Title of Lesson or Activity: Patterns Everywhere!
Objectives:
1. Students will label patterns as ABAB, ABBA, AABB, AABA, ABCAB, etc.
2. Students will create their own patterns and label them.
Standards of Learning:
1. K.16 The student will identify, describe, and extend repeating patterns.
Materials:
Foam Stamps-4 kinds
Ink-4 colors
Sentence strips
Procedure:
During math, I will have three different groups, and I have differentiated what they will
be doing based on their level. Each group is group by ability level with a low, middle, and high
group. I am going to write the procedure for each groups activity based on the level of the
group.
Low: For the low group, we will review patterns and labeling patterns. They will get a
sentence strip. I will have them make an ABAB pattern on one side. On the other side, I
will challenge them to make an ABBA pattern. They will only get to use 2 ink colors and
2 stamps.
Middle/High: These two groups will do the same things except they will be able to use all
4 stamps and all 4 ink colors. I will have them make a pattern with the stamp shape first
on one side. On the other side, the students will make a different pattern using color this
time. They must label their patterns when they finish. They cannot make a simple ABAB
pattern. I will demonstrate one for them, and then I will ask if any students can come up
with an example pattern before we start.
Differentiation Strategies:
As labeled above, I have differentiated the activities based on ability level.
Assessment:
Informal assessment through their sentence strip and their labeling.
