History of the Kootenais
They lived along the Kootenai River in Idaho,
Montana, and British Columbia.
They were hunter-gatherers and loved to eat salmon.
They lived in cone-shaped houses made from wooden
poles and rush mats.

Relationship with the U.S.
Government
1855 the Kootenai Tribe refused to
sign a treaty with the U.S. Government
that would require them to surrender
their lands in Idaho and move to
Montana
Dawes Act of 1887 broke up tribal
land holdings into individual allotments
The tribe was awarded $425,000 in a
land claims settlement in 1960 because
of illegal land loss.
Sept. 20, 1974 67 members of the tribe
declared war against the U.S. They
didnt engage in violence and were
awarded 12.5 acres of land.

The Kootenai Tribe Today
Since 1986, the tribe
has owned and
operated the
Kootenai River Inn
located in Bonners
Ferry, ID.
It is now known as
the Kootenai River
Inn Casino and Spa.
Industries on the
Kootenai Reservation
include timber,
tourism, and selling
sand and gravel. They
also own a sturgeon
hatchery.

governed by the Kootenai Tribal Council.
They are divided into 3 districts based on family groups
