THE UNFAIR-WORLD
In class today, we had a relay race demonstrating the privileges given to the Socs, while the
Greasers had no advantage. This demonstrated how the real world is not always fair and some
get it easier than others. For example we had an egg relay race, but the Socs got a huge spoon
while the Greasers had a very small spoon. Of course the Greasers are going to lose, this is just an
example of the advantages and disadvantages in the real world.
This relay race we did in class today, reects the lives of most kids in our school and in Marin.
The kids in Marin and especially Tiburon are privileged to basically whatever they want. They
can get food, shelter, water, computers, and can live a life with out fear of death. Others in
different parts of the world dont get to live with all these advantages and have to work very
hard just to get a sip of water or a bite of bread every day. Kids in our community dont have to
work at all to get food, and they will not experience actually working for survival. This activity
truly showed how the world is not fair and some have to try hard than others to get the same
success.

STEREOTYPE GONE
WRONG
To stereotype is to judge someone on appearance or an trait on the outside, not the inside. It is basically jumping to an
conclusion on someone, that you dont even know. This simple process, start has started wars all over the world and is still a
problem today. I think stereotyping leads to conicts, because stereotypes are usually lies or not truthful. No one likes to hear
things about themselves that is not true, because that is not who they are. If people actually went and met a person their
stereotyping, they may nd that they were wrong about what they though. When groups stereotype other groups they are
making conclusions about everybody, they dont know everyone in the group and I probably only know one or two of them.
You only really know the truth when you personally have met the person or the whole group.
For example, Ponyboy and Johnny took the risk to hang out with Socs, and actually beneted. They thought they were
going to meet horrible people in Cherry and Marcia, but instead they met very nice people. Ponyboy also notices that not
only greasers have problems, but that Socs arent perfect and have problems too. If Johnny and Ponyboy never went out of
their comfort zone to talk the two girls, they would never experience the truth. Only the stereotype. This is just one example
why stereotypes can be wrong, and lead to false interpretation.
In addition, I have experienced lots of stereotyping in my real life. There have been many incidents where I have witnessed
racism with stereotypes, but there is one stereotype that I have a experienced that straight out makes me laugh. It all started
on the school at the beginning of fourth grade. I would always come on the bus at the last stop, so my all of my friends were
already there. I would always sit next to the same friend every day, Andrew. Little did I know that Andrew sat next to the
new kid named Cole everyday before I got, but then left to sit with me. As you would probably suspect, Cole wasnt too
thrilled about this. He was mad, he thought I was a total jerk, and he wanted to punch me right in the jaw. After a month of
this hatred I was introduced to Cole and we became great friends. We are still great friends and he doesnt feel the same way
as he did before (hopefully). This just shows how stereotypes can be so wrong it makes you laugh, after all most people dont
think their friends are jerks.

HELPING THE
BOYS OUT
Murder. Its such a harsh thing, taking the life of another. Yet, it happens. Some are accidents,
some are planned, and some are self-defense, but all lead to Jail. Life-terms in jail that change
your life and sometimes end your life. If you ever have the authority to ever leave the jail, you
wont be the same and will be declined in any job you apply for. There is a slight possibility that
the court will let you go for a small term, but the risk of revealing yourself is way to high. This is
the same problem that Johnny faces.

Johnny and Ponyboy have to make this decision and they dont know what to do, so they asks
Dallas. Dallas tells them to run way and gives them some money, a gun, and tells them a place to
hide out. If Johnny and Ponyboy came up to me and asked, I would give/tell them very similar
things to what Dally did/said. I would tell Johnny and Ponyboy to go to a town that they can live
in for a couple years, where they can get jobs, and find a very cheap shelter. I would also give
Ponyboy and Johnny a decent amount of money that can give food and shelter for a week, till
they find a paying job. I would make sure to visit Johnny and Ponyboy to see how they are doing
and if they need money help. Lastly, I would give them a switchblade (if Johnny didnt have his)
if any emergencies occur. I would remind Johnny only to use the blade when absolutely needed
and to only kill if youre saving another life in the process. If all goes well Johnny and Ponyboy
Curtis could be back to Tulsa, in about 15 years and have a fresh new start.

NOTHING GOLD
CAN STAY
Peace and Harmony. These are the goals Ponyboy tries to reach in the Outsiders. S.E Hinton the marvelous writer of this story
tries to show Ponyboys goal by showing the great poem of Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost. This poem starts out by saying
nature starts the day with beauty, but this beauty is hard to keep. The next verse states that natures rst leafs were beautiful owers,
but they only stayed for an hour. Frost continues in saying that the ower subsides (falls down) just to come back as a normal leaf.
This is like how Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge and lost permission to go back to the Garden of Eden where they can
be immortal and care free. Robert nishes of by relating Eden sinking to grief by saying to how dawn lasts only a couple a
minutes and is very short part of the day. Then to close the poem says nothing gold can stay or nothing good can stay, it always go
away. This is Ponyboys problem, no peace or harmony can stay. All the good things that happen to Ponyboy last for minimal
amounts of time. For example, Ponyboy was having a great time with Cherry Valence at the movies, they could talk about anything
and be comfortable with each other. This all ended when Bob drove by and yelled at the Greasers. The Greasers soon gave Cherry
and Marcia back to the Socs. This same idea was repeated over and over in Frosts poem. Nothing good can stay, it will always
leave. Nothing gold can stay.
I think that this same poem relates to the idea of, What is an hero?. I think Ponyboys demonstrates heroism by always
picking is head up after every beat down. Ponyboy tries to keep his head up, no matter what. This still might seem irrelevant, but
there is quote that states, It doesnt matter how hard you hit, it matters how fast you get up after you get hit, I think this perfectly
demonstrates Ponyboy. He is not buff nor tall, but he gets up and carries on. Thats what makes him a hero.
Lastly, this very controversial poem has one more controversy; is this poem sad or happy. I personally think that this poem is
both positive and negative in different parts. The whole poem acknowledges the great wonders of mother nature and the world, as a
positive. Then it refers to the same subject and says that this glory/great wonders will never stay for long and it will always end. In
the end, the poem is telling you to realize the positives, but dont get over attached because they will always end.

A HERO
In the book the Outsiders a recurring theme is; what makes a hero? In modern
society it known that a hero is a person who always does good for his/her community,
this hero might obtain a cape to activate all ying powers. In the Outsiders, it shows
that you dont have to be perfect to be a hero, you can just be you. To be a hero it
means that you go out on a adventure that is past your comfort zone and after failing
once or twice you succeed and defeat/overcome what ever your challenge was.
Anyone can be a hero if they want to, but it always involves taking a risk. It doesnt
matter what you have done previous in your life, you can always be a hero. On the
other hand, when someone says that he/she is my hero they are trying to say that
they look up to someone. They simply admire the actions of their hero and usually
want to be like them. Whatever they did makes them want to be similar to their hero.
The character Dally in the Outsiders is very mysterious and readers do not know
much about him. Dallys true personality is partially revealed in chapter 6, when he
looks out for Johnny. He actually cares for someone. He does this by telling
Johnny not to turn himself him and by jumping in the burning church to save Johnny.
We learn that Dally is not self-centered lowlife, but he just hides his personality to
himself. Now that we know this, I think Dally would do the same thing for Ponyboy
and Darry. They are both part of the greaser gang and would look out for them. Both
of them benet Dallys life so he would save them. On the other hand, if he had the
choice to save a Soc he would not. Socs never benetted Dallys life, so Dally would
not return the favor. Dallys not that nice.

THE LAST WORDS
As }ohnny's life slowly faues away the boys come to visit. They tell him that they won
the iumble ovei the Soc's, but }ohnny uoesn't seem to caie about the fight anu states that
he hates fighting. Soon latei ueath comes knocking at }ohnny's uooi, but }ohnny manageu
to get his veiy last woius out. Be fiist lookeu at Ponyboy then says, "Stay uolu, Ponyboy.
Stay uolu ." When stating this he is ielating Robeit Fiost poem that Ponyboy eailiei
ieciteu, "Nothing uolu Can Stay". Be is instiucting Ponyboy to always be the gieat, smait,
funny, not cuisoiy, anu enthusiastic peison even if he can't be theie to witness. In othei
woius, he is telling Ponyboy to always be the golu, even if it's supposeu to uie. Befine the
limits of gieatness, be the best peison you can be foi eveiy single seconu you can. Foi this
you will be ieuoubtable. Bon't let Robeit Fiost tell you that nothing peifect oi 'golu' can
stay, make it stay foi eveiy single seconu youi heait beats. No mattei the ups oi the
uowns, always keep anu uisplay the wonueifulness that is unloggeu in Ponyboy's soul. I
think Ponyboy will have to foitify, but will enu up "following thiough" anu staying golu foi
as long as it seems ieasonable. Be will always have }ohnny in the back of his heau
suppoiting him to stay peifect anu unique. In auuition, Baiiy will gieatly help in
Ponyboy's attempt to stay golu. Baiiy always suppoits anu helps Ponyboy so he can
maintain high giaues in school anu evens is a bit officious. I think Baiiy woulu mollify anu
suppoit Ponyboy as much as he can, so he can suceeu. In conclusion, }ohnny's last woiu,
"Stay uolu", has a veiy uisputable meaning, but no mattei what it has ueep significance.
