%hiva which fell on the earth. *he earth goddess was re4uested to bring him up and thus became his
mother. &part from helping in marriage and clearing of debts, he also helps us to lead a healthy life.
Recitation of this stotra is propitious on *uesdays.

%ut8i repliedJ 6nce, -ord 9rahma and -ord 5ishnu developed serious different on the matter of
superiority. & tremendous duel broke out between them. &s they were fighting a mammoth -inga
appeared on the scence, the effulgence of which made efforts both of them ama0ed.9oth of them
decided to find out the origin of that divine -inga. -ord 9rahma transformed his appearance into that of
a swan and flew up in the sky to determine the height of that -inga. -ord 5ishnu transformed himself
into a roar and entered the depth of earth to find the source of that %hiva -inga. 9ut both of them failed
in their ob8ectives and returned to the same place eEhausted.

waist, and her forehead is decorated with ornaments of white bone. %age &kshobhya, in the form of a
serpent, is situated on her head. %he is seated on the heart of corpse, and her breasts are hard. *hus
should one meditate on 9hagavati *ara, who is the (istress of all three worlds.
*ara is also known as )ila,%arasvati. *his is )ila,%arasvati as %arasvati in her darker aspect. %he
makes one unbeatable in debate, as long as they are truthful and not opinionated. %arasvati is the
7oddess of speech, intellect etc. *ara as )ila,%arvisvati is the protective and destructive power of
speech.
Here is her meditation form from the *arashtakam
(other, dark blue %arasvati, who grant all that is auspicious to those who surrender to you, who sit
with your left leg eEtended, you who are the heart of %hiva, with a smiling lotus face.
Who have three eyes like a budding, lotus, the creatriE, who carry a severed head, a lotus, and a sword,
I take refuge in you, the supreme lady of the worlds.

5riyatita* the transcendent state
N= How are the three states of consciousness inferior in
degree of reality to the fourth .*uriya'K What is the
actual relation between these three states and the fourth

(aharshi= *here is only one state, that of
consciousness or awareness or eEistence. *he
three states of waking, dream and deep sleep cannot be
real.*hey simply come and go. *he real will always
eEist.*he OIO or eEistence that alone persists in all the
three states is real. *he other three are not real and so it
is not possible to say they have such and such degree of
reality. We may roughly put it like this, 3Eistence or
consciousness is the only reality. onsciousness plus
waking, we call waking.onsciousness plus sleep, we
call sleep.onsciousness plus dream, we call dream.
onsciousness is the screen, on which all the pictures
come and go. *he screen is real, the pictures are mere
shadows on it. 9ecause by long habit, we have been regarding these three states as real, we call the
state of mere awareness or consciousness the fourth. *here is
however, no fourth state, but only one state.
*here is no difference between dream and the waking state eEcept that the dream is short and the
waking long. 9oth are the result of the mind. 9ecause the waking state is long, we imagine that it is our
real state. 9ut, as a matter of fact, our real state is *uriya or the fourth state which is always as it is and
knows nothing of the three states of waking, dream or deep sleep. 9ecause we call these three &vastha
FstatesG we call the fourth state also *uriya &vastha. 9ut it is not an &vastha, but the real and natural
state of the %elf. When this is realised, we know it is not a *uriya or fourth state, for a fourth state is
only relative, but *uriyatita, the transcendent state.

standing K> *o him replied the -ord )arayana= Wise sages consider that one who remains in the path of
the &vadhuta is very rare in the world and .such sages' are not manyR if one becomes .an &vadhuta' he
is ever pure, he is indeed the embodiment of dispassionR he is indeed the visible form of wisdom and he
is indeed the personification of the 5eda .5edapurusha'. He is a .truly' great man, as his mind abides in
me alone. Indeed I too abide in him. In due order, having been first a hut,dwelling ascetic .<utichaka',
he reaches the stage of a mendicant monk .9ahudaka'R the mendicant monk attains to the stage of a
Hamsa asceticR the Hamsa ascetic .then' becomes the highest kind of ascetic .+aramahamsa'. .In this
stage' by introspection he reali0es the entire world .as non,different from his %elf'R renouncing all
personal possessions in .a reservoir of' waters, .such things as' his emblematic staff, water pot, waist
band, loincloth that covers .his privities' and all ritualistic duties en8oined on him .in a previous stage'R
becoming unclad .lit. clothed by the points of the compass'R abandoning even the acceptance of a
discoloured, worn out bark garment or .deer' skinR behaving thereafter .after the stage of the
+aramahamsa' as one sub8ect to no mantras .i.e. performing no rituals' and gives up shaving, oil bath,
the perpendicular mark of sandal paste on the forehead, etc.
!. He is one terminating all religious and secular dutiesR free of religious merit or otherwise in all
situationsR giving up both knowledge and ignoranceR con4uering .the influence of' cold and heat,
happiness and misery, honour and dishonourR having burnt up in advance, with the latent influence
.vasana' of the body, etc., censure, praise, pride, rivalry, ostentation, haughtiness, desire, hatred, love,
anger, covetousness, delusion, .gloating' 8oy, intolerance, envy, clinging to life, etc.R viewing his body
as a corpse, as it wereR becoming e4uanimous effortlessly and unrestrainedly in gain or lossR sustaining
his life .with food placed in the mouth' like a cowR .satisfied' with .food' as it comes without ardently
longing for itR reducing to ashes the host of learning and scholarshipR guarding his conduct .without
vaunting his noble way of life'R disowning the superiority or inferiority .of any one'R .firmly'
established in non,duality .of the %elf' which is the highest .principle' of all and which comprises all
within itselfR cherishing the conviction, Q*here is nought else distinct from me>R absorbing in the %elf
the fuel .of concept' other than the secret known only by the godsR untouched by sorrowR unresponsive
to .worldly' happinessR free of desire for affectionR unattached everywhere to the auspicious or the
inauspiciousR with .the functioning of' all senses at standstillR unmindful of the superiority of his
conduct, learning and moral merit .dharma' ac4uired in the previous stages of his lifeR giving up the
conduct befitting caste and stage of life .5anaprastha'R dreamless, as night and day are the same to himR
ever on the move everywhereR remaining with the body alone left to himR his water,pot being the
watering,place .only'R ever sensible .but' wandering alone as though he were a child, madman or
ghostR always observing silence and deeply meditating on his %elf, he has for his support the propless
.9rahman'R forgetting everything .else' in consonance with the absorption in his %elfR this *uriyatita
sage reaching the state of the &vadhuta ascetic and completely absorbed in non,duality .of the &tman'
.finally' gives up his body as he has become one with 6m .the +ranava'= such an ascetic is an
&vadhutaR he has accomplished his life>s purpose. *hus .ends' the /panishad.
