Sentara Application Essay Sung-Ki Lee 2014

The reason I want to be involved in the Sentara Healthcare Jr. Volunteer Program is because
experience at a hospital will prepare me for the future when I become a doctor. I believe volunteering in
the program will help me because John Keats once said Nothing ever becomes real 'til it is
experienced. I will be able to meet real doctors, experience patients, and understand the functions of a
hospital. In this way it will allow me to learn and take a step closer in becoming a doctor. Also working at
Sentara Jr. Volunteer Program I hope to help patients in any way possible because the reason I wanted to
become a doctor is due to the patients I meat in my life. For example, there was this girl at my middle
school when I was in 8
th
grade and her younger sister has a disability. The younger sister has a disability
that only few people in the world have, and the doctors predicted that the child will die in a few years. So
her sister decided to write a book about her disabled sister and she presented the book to my class. As I
stood and listened to her read the book and talk about her disabled sister my heart became full of guilt. I
knew that I have to be thankful for everything I have because I dont know when they will disappear;
however, I really noticed how important things were to me at that moment. All I wanted to do at that
moment was ask God for help to cure the childs disability because there is no cure for this disability and
only a few doctors know about this disability. Therefore, through this volunteer program I wish to meet
all kinds of people and talk to them and help them. Another reason I want to join the Sentara Jr. Volunteer
Program is because I know I want to become a doctor; however, I do not know what type of doctor I wish
to become. Therefore, through the program I wish to discover what type of doctor I really want to become
and what way I can help the patient the most. I hope that Sentara will provide me a variety of experiences
so that I could specifically choose my career goal. As a child I have heard many people say Dream big,
because your dreams may become a reality. I hope this statement is true for my dream to become a
doctor because I know the path in becoming a doctor is very hard; therefore, I ask for you to give me the
opportunity to keep on dreaming and dreaming bigger by accepting me into this program. As a doctor I
know I can help many people because Eleanor Roosevelt once said, The future belongs to those who
believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Growing up I have gained interests in many hobbies, and activities. One thing I love to do is play
sports in general especially soccer. I have been playing soccer since 6
th
grade for the school. Another
thing I am interested in is playing instruments, such as the drums, violin, piano, and guitar; however, I can
only play the drums and violin well. Something special about me is that I can speak three languages
English, Korean, and Spanish. However, I am not fluent in Spanish but I know the basics of it. My
weekend and extra time is almost always spent at church because I am devoted to living a Christian life
although it is very hard to do. I also have volunteered for Outreach for Christ which is a Christian
organization that helps children who are poor and in need of help. Some things special about me is that I
have been in Jr. District Orchestra in 7
th
and 8
th
grade, and Senior Regional Orchestra in 9
th
grade for
playing the Violin. Also I have always maintained honor roll throughout my middle school and high
school career; therefore, when I graduated middle school I have received the Presidents award for
education. I am currently enrolled in the IB program of Princess Anne High School and I was enrolled in
the Middle Years Program at Plaza Middle School. In Middle School I was involved in National Junior
Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and many other clubs. Currently I am involved in the Medical and
Legal Society, psychology club, orchestra club, and Spanish honor society. In 8
th
grade I entered into an
essay contest for Veterans of Foreign Wars and I have won second place in the contest with over
hundreds of competitors. Thank you for this opportunity to apply and I hope to meet you at Sentara!
