World Chess Championship 1886

The World Chess Championship 1886 was the first official World Chess
Championship match contested by Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort. The
match took place in the USA, the first five games being played in New York, the
next four being played in St. Louis and the final eleven in New Orleans. The winner
was the first player to achieve ten wins. Wilhelm Steinitz won the match 10-5,
winning his tenth game in the twentieth game of the match (with five losses and
five draws).

Background
Previously, there were a number of "unofficial" world championship matches held
between the undisputed leading players of the day, but talk of an official World
Championship did not occur prior to the 1866 match between Steinitz and Adolf
Anderssen. Steinitz won that match (+8 -6 =0) and although he made no known
reference to a "World Championship" at the time, in later life he would sometimes
backdate the tenure of his reign to the date of the Anderssen match. However, most
historians now accept that the 1886 match between Steinitz and Zukertort was the
first official World Championship match.

Preparations
At the London 1883 chess tournament, a prestigious 14-player, double-round, allplay-all tournament,[2] Zukertort was the convincing winner with 22/26, ahead of
Steinitz (19/26), Blackburne(16/22) and Chigorin (16/22). In many respects, the
event resembled a modern day Candidates Tournament, in that most of the world's
leading players took part and the top two cemented their reputations as contenders
for a world title.
(A common story relates to an incident that occurred at the tournament banquet,
when the St. George Chess Club President proposed a toast to the best chess player
in the world and both Steinitz and Zukertort stood up at the same time to thank him.
Research by Edward G. Winter suggests that this story has been embellished.)
The following year saw the death of Paul Morphy and so finally, nothing stood in
the way of a first official World Championship match between the two rivals. As
there was a degree of hostility between them, the match arrangements were
somewhat protracted and lasted almost 3 years. Disagreement over the choice of
venue was resolved when Steinitz finally persuaded Zukertort to accept
the USA over London, his new place of residence. This was mostly due to the better
conditions offered to the players by the American organisers. Zukertort was given
the princely sum of $750 to make the trip across the Atlantic and the winner of the
match was promised a quarter of the proceeds from the betting syndication.
The match was to use the same chess clock as 3 years earlier and the time limit was
determined as 30 moves in 2 hours, followed by another 15 moves in each
subsequent hour. For the first time in chess history, a demonstration board
measuring approximately 1 metre square was erected above the players, so that the
spectators could follow the game while remaining in their seats.

The match
Play commenced on January 11, 1886 at 14.00 hours, in the Cartiers Academy Hall,
No. 80, Fifth Avenue, New York. After the first five games, the venue switched
to St. Louis for a further four. With the match result still in the balance (4-4, with
one draw), the concluding chapter was played out in New Orleans, by which time
Zukertort was said to be living on his wits, physically fatigued and approaching
mental breakdown. Steinitz on the other hand, appeared to be playing more robustly,
with a bottomless pit of mental stamina. His strategic mastery quickly took control
of the match and he wrapped things up with a further six wins, four draws and just
one defeat. The final game ended on March 29, 1886 when Zukertort tended his
resignation and congratulated the new World Champion.

In the aftermath, it was apparent that Zukertort's play had been overly impulsive; he
had regularly taken half the time of Steinitz and it is likely that this was connected
to a heart condition he had carried since childhood. Two years later, Zukertort died
of a heart attack.

Results
The winner would be the first to 10 wins, draws not counting. In the event of a 9-9
tie, neither player would be champion.

World Chess Championship 1894

The fifth World Chess Championship was held in New York (games 18), Philadelphia (games 9-11) and Montreal (games 12-19) between March 15 and
May 26, 1894. Holder William Steinitz lost his title to challenger Emanuel Lasker,
who was 32 years his junior.

Lasker won the Championship.

Steinitz had previously declared he would win without doubt, so it came as a shock
when Lasker won the first game. Steinitz responded by winning the second, and was
able to maintain the balance until the sixth. However, Lasker won all the games from
the seventh to the 11th, and Steinitz asked for a one-week rest. When the match
resumed, Steinitz looked in better shape and won the 13th and 14th games. Lasker
struck back in the 15th and 16th, and Steinitz was unable to compensate for his
losses in the middle of the match. Hence Lasker won with ten wins, five losses and
four draws. Some commentators thought Steinitz's habit of playing "experimental"
moves in serious competition was a major factor in his downfall.

What Lasker refuted was 10. Ba3, which is not a very good move. Also 12...Kf7 in this game
is not best. Better is:

Instead of 10. Ba3:

There are some slight variations on this line but they all lead to a small advantage for black.
So how can white improve? Perhaps 7. Nc3 is too frisky. The alternatives, Bd2 and Nbd2 are
better than Nc3 but lead to equality. Surely white should expect more out of the opening by
move 7.
All this seems to mean that 5. d4 is premature. What is usually played these days is d3 and
b4. For example:
5. d3 d6 6. b4 Bb6 7. a4 a6 8. 0-0 0-0

With a slight edge for white. Not as big an advantage as other openings but still a good game.

19.Qh5 seems an interesting alternative to the pawn capture played, 19...Bd5

(19...Rg7 20.Bxg5 Rdg8 21.g3 Qd7) 20.Qxh7 Bxg2 21.Rxg5 Rxg5 22.Bxg5
Rd7 with an unclear position.
Soltis, however, gives Steinitz's 19th move a "!" in "Why Lasker Matters"
p.88, but also states that "<19.f3> was a serious alternative". He gives no
analysis, but <19.f3> 20.fxg4 Rxg4 21.g3 Rd5 seems safe enough for Black.
Soltis believes that <28.Qf2> made Steinitz's game be more difficult that it
should. He instead recommends <28.f5> Rg8 29.Bxf6 Qf3 30.Be5 h5 31.Qe2

In fact, 11...f5 appears stronger than 11...Be6. In <Marco65>'s post, 14...Qd7 refutes white's
attack. The queen is needed on d7 to defend e8.
After 11...f5 12.Nd2 Be6 13.Nxe4 fxe4 14.Rxe4 Qd7 15. d5 0-0-0 16. Rxe6 Qxd5, black has

All this seems to mean that 10. Ba3 is not good. Lasker's 11...Be6 also leads to a black
advantage, albeit smaller than 11...f5.

17.g4> is very sharp, but unfortunately for Steinitz has a tactical flaw. The
rather surprising <17.Ne4> is quite playable, and if 17...Qxc2, then 18.Nxf6+

Instead of 17...Nxc3, <17...Bxd4> would have given Lasker a significant
advantage, e.g. 18.Nxd5 Qxc2 19.Bxc2 Bxb2
Steinitz could have held his own with <27.Nxf5+!>. This takes advantage of
the discovered attack on <f5> by his bishop, 27...Kf8 (the reason being if

27...Qxf5?? 28.Qb4+ wins the Queen outright) 28.Qb4+ Kf7 29.Nd6+ Bxd6

<40. Qf6+> would simply lose the Queen.
Steinitz missed 40. Qf6+ Kg8 41. Re1-e8#!!! how could he miss that and call it a
draw?> 40. Qf6+ Qxf6 and Steinitz might as well flip over the table.
