Mechanical Design Using Solidworks Wheels and Axle



In this tutorial you will be modeling a toy car and driver.

Create the Axle

1. Open Solidworks. You will find the icon on your
desktop

2. Select File>New

3. Select Part from the window that opens and click
OK. Solidworks will open.

4. Confirm that you are using metric units by selecting
Tools>Options>Document Properties>Units. Make sure
MMGS is selected and press OK.

5. Click on Front Plane in the file manager found on the left
side of the screen. A menu will appear.

6. Move your mouse up to the Sketch Icon and click. You are
now sketching on the right plane.








7. Select the circle sketch tool. Click on the origin (red arrows)
and drag out to draw a circle.

8. Select Smart Dimension and click once on the circle, drag out
away from the circle and click once to place the dimension.

9. Double click on the dimension. A window will appear that
will allow you to change the size of your circle.

10. Type 15 and click the green arrow. The circle is resized.

11. Click on Extruded Boss/Base found under the Features Tab.

12. Change the Direction to
Mid Plane and set the
distance to 80mm.

13. Click the green checkmark
to accept the extrude. You
have just created the axle.

14. Save your work in your
working folder.










Add the Wheels

1. Click once on the flat surface of the end of the axle. Select the Sketch icon from the menu that
appears. You are now sketching on that surface.

2. Press the spacebar and double click on Normal to.
The model will reorient so you are looking straight
onto the face.

3. Select the Circle tool and draw a circle centered about the origin.

4. Dimension the circle to be 50 mm.

5. Select the extrude tool from the features toolbar. Extrude
the circle 20m.

6. Press Spacebar and select isometric to view your axle.
Repeat the steps on the other end of the axle to create the second
wheel.
