History
Established: March 18, 1593
Name / the founder (s): MIGUEL DE IBARRA
Historical review:
It was the religious capital of the Chibcha of
Zipazgo, whose sacred lake, temple veneration
maximum Chie, water, the most celebrated of his
pompous ceremonies that gave rise to the legend
of El Dorado. Guatavita in Chibcha language means
to tillage or point of the mountain, according to
Acosta Ortegn.
The founding of the new town was the Judge
Miguel de Ibarra, on March 18, 1593 when he made
them auto adjudication of lands.





SIMBOLS

representing the sacred waters Guatavita, rather
than religious ceremonies of the Muisca, and where
the beautiful legend Dorado follows. Also the dam
of Tomin under whose waters sleeps ancient
people.
In the center of the effigy cacica unfaithful wife,
Guatavita cacique, which legend took to the waters
of the lagoon, where it was discovered by her
husband.

A huge golden sun, alluding to the rich goldsmith
played by indigenous and represents the treasure
that lies at the bottom of the lake, according to
legend. .




Geography
Physical Description: The New Guatavita location.
To the north-east of Bogot to 75 kilometers, the
North Freeway, is the town of Guatavita, with a
height of 2680 Mts. Height above the sea, 4
degrees 56 minutes north latitude and 73 degrees
51 minutes longitude west of Greenwich, with an
area of 23,800 hectares, urban area 238 square
kilometers.
Town limits: Limits on the north by the
municipality of Sesquil and Machet; on the east
by Gachet and Junin; Guasca the south and Sopo
and on the west by Tocancip and Gachancip.
Total area: 247.3 km2
Extension Urban Area: 6.84 km2
Extension rural area: 240.46 km2
