/ll%sionists are 0specialist1 2agic-3sers -ho &oc%s on the
creation and manip%lation o& ill%sions, and at higher le!els
the 4%asi-real st%&& o& the planes o& shado-. .ho%gh
0normal1 2agic-3sers can create ill%sions, those created
$y a real ill%sionist are s%perior in 4%ality and realism.
.he Prime Re4%isite &or an /ll%sionist is /ntelligence. .he
/ll%sionist is re4%ired to ha!e an /ntelligence score o& 13 or
higher. /ll%sionists are poor &ighters, -ith &ighting a$ility
e4%i!alent to normal 2agic-3sers. (i5e-ise they are no
more hardy than standard 2agic-3sers 6d7 hit die8. .hey
may not -ear any armor o& any sort or %se shields. (i5e
other 2agic-3sers, they can %tili9e a -al5ing sta&& or
dagger, and o& co%rse, they may %se magical -eapons o&
those types. 'ther-ise, /ll%sionists can generally $e
treated as e4%i!alent to 2agic-3sers &or any sit%ation not
co!ered here.
)eca%se o& their e:pertise at creating and %nderstanding
ill%sions, /ll%sionists al-ays gain an additional ;2 on sa!es
!s. any sort o& ill%sion or phantasm.
/ll%sionists prod%ce magic m%ch li5e other types o&
2agic-3sers, $%t ha!e di&&erent spell choices. .hey can
learn spells &rom each other so long as the spells are
a!aila$le to $oth classes. (i5e other 2agic-3sers, a &irst
le!el /ll%sionist $egins play 5no-ing read magic and one
other spell o& &irst le!el, recorded -ithin a spell $oo5. .he
G2 may roll &or the spell, assign it as he or she sees &it, or
allo- the player to choose it, at his or her option. See the
/ll%sionist Spells section &or more details.
A BASIC FANTASY SUPPLEMENT ILLUSIONISTS
ILLUSIONIST SPELLS
/ll%sionists cast spells thro%gh the e:ercise o& 5no-ledge
and -ill, e:actly as normal 2agic-3sers. .hey prepare
spells $y st%dy o& their spell$oo5s< each /ll%sionist has his
or her o-n spell$oo5, containing the magical &orm%lae &or
each spell the /ll%sionist has learned, -ritten in a magical
script that can only $e read $y the /ll%sionist -ho -rote it,
or thro%gh the %se o& a special &irst-le!el spell, read magic.
"ll /ll%sionists $egin play -ith read magic as their &irst
spell, and it is so ingrained that a /ll%sionist can prepare it
-itho%t a spell$oo5. Read magic has a range o& 0to%ch1
and is permanent -ith respect to any gi!en magical -or5
6spell$oo5 or scroll8.
/ll%sionists may learn spells $y $eing ta%ght directly $y
another /ll%sionist, or $y st%dying another /ll%sionist=s
spell$oo5. .he /ll%sionist may also learn appropriate spels
&rom standard 2agic-3sers 6or other arcane casters, i&
%sed8< the spell al-ays $eing at the le!el as it appears on
the /ll%sionist Spell (ist. (i5e-ise, a 2agic-3ser may learn
spells shared $y the classes &rom an /ll%sionist. /& $eing
ta%ght, a spell can $e learned in a single day< researching
another /ll%sionist=s spell$oo5 ta5es one day per spell
le!el. >ither -ay, the spell learned m%st $e transcri$ed
into the /ll%sionist=s o-n spell$oo5, at a cost o& ?00 gp per
spell le!el transcri$ed. " $eginning /ll%sionist starts -ith a
spell$oo5 containing read magic and at least one other
&irst-le!el spell, as determined $y the Game 2aster, at no
cost.

li5e-ise scripted, so the ill%sion -ill not respond i& spo5en

.his spell allo-s the caster to ass%me the &orm o& a
creat%re o& the same $ody type 6i.e. h%manoid8. .he ne-
&orm m%st $e -ithin ?0H o& his normal si9e. .he ass%med
&orm canIt ha!e more hit dice than the caster=s le!el, nor
more than ? E# at most. .he caster can change into a
mem$er o& his o-n 5ind or e!en into himsel&.
.he caster retains his or her o-n a$ility scores, class,
le!el, hit points, attac5 $on%s and sa!ing thro-s. /& the
ne- &orm is capa$le o& speech, he or she can
comm%nicate normally and cast spells. .he caster
ac4%ires the physical 4%alities o& the ne- &orm, incl%ding
armor class, mo!ement capa$ilities 6s%ch as clim$ing,
s-imming and &light, $%t not incl%ding magical mo!ement

she creates -hen casting the spell, and cannot therea&ter

.he !ol%me o& so%nd created is e4%i!alent to the noise o&
t-o normal h%mans per caster le!el. .h%s, tal5ing,
singing, sho%ting, -al5ing, marching, or r%nning so%nds

+hen a $l%r spell is cast, the caster ca%ses the o%tline o&
the creat%re to%ched to appear $l%rred, shi&ting and
-a!ering. .his distortion ca%ses all missile and melee
com$at attac5s to $e made at -7 on the &irst attempt and
-2 on all s%ccessi!e attac5s. /t also grants a ;1 on the
sa!ing thro- die roll against any direct magical attac5.
" detect in!isi$le spell does not co%nteract the $l%r e&&ect,
$%t a tr%e seeing spell does. 'pponents that cannot see
the s%$Fect ignore the spellIs e&&ect 6tho%gh &ighting an
%nseen opponent carries penalties o& its o-n8.

.his spell allo-s the caster to alter his or her appearance.
.his incl%des not only $ody shape and &acial &eat%res, $%t
also clothing, armor, -eapons, and e4%ipment. .he
caster can seem %p to one &oot shorter or taller, and may
appear thin, &at, or any si9e in $et-een. .his spell cannot
changes the o!erall $ody shape o& the caster 6to loo5 li5e
a dog, &or e:ample8. 'ther-ise, the e:tent o& the
apparent change is %p to the caster.
.he spell does not pro!ide the a$ilities or mannerisms o&
the chosen &orm, nor does it alter the percei!ed tactile
6to%ch8 or a%di$le 6so%nd8 properties o& the caster or his
e4%ipment.

&aintly glo-ing, !ag%ely h%manoid shape.
.he dancing lights m%st stay -ithin a 10-&oot-radi%s area
in relation to each other $%t other-ise mo!e as the caster
desires, %p to 100 &eet per ro%nd. Jote that concentration

.he caster can %se this spell to end all ongoing 0ill%sion
spells1 -ithin a c%$ic area 20= on a side. #ispel ill%sion
a&&ects spells s%ch as a%di$le glamer, phantasmal &orce,
spectral &orce, ad!anced ill%sion, etc. .he G2 has the
responsi$ility to identi&y -hich spells are ill%sions.
"ny ill%sion spell cast $y a character o& a le!el e4%al to or
less than the dispel ill%sion caster=s le!el is ended
a%tomatically. .hose created $y higher le!el casters might
not $e canceled< there is a ?H chance o& &ail%re &or each
le!el the ill%sion=s caster le!el e:ceeds the dispel ill%sion
caster le!el. *or e:ample, a 10th le!el caster dispelling an
ill%sion created $y a 17th le!el caster has a 20H chance
o& &ail%re.
+hen an /ll%sionist attempts to dispel an ill%sion cast $y a
non-/ll%sionist, the /ll%sionist is treated as i& he or she -ere
t-o le!els higher< i& it is not o$!io%s -hether the ill%sion
-as created $y an /ll%sionist or not, the G2 sho%ld

similar s%r&ace, co!ering %p to a 10= s4%are area, %p to 1=
thic5. .he section o& -all created appears a$sol%tely real
-hen !ie-ed, $%t physical o$Fects can pass thro%gh it
-itho%t di&&ic%lty. +hen the spell is %sed to hide pits,
traps, or normal doors, any detection a$ilities that do not
re4%ire sight -or5 normally. .o%ch or a pro$ing search
may re!eal the tr%e nat%re o& the s%r&ace< the G2 may

)y means o& this spell, the caster $anishes the target
creat%re into an e:tradimensional la$yrinth. 'nce per
ro%nd, the !ictim o& this spell may attempt a sa!e !s.
spells to escape the la$yrinth. /& the !ictim does not
escape, the ma9e disappears a&ter 10 min%tes, &reeing the
!ictim at that time.
'n escaping or lea!ing the ma9e, the target creat%re
reappears -here it had $een -hen the ma9e spell -as
cast. /& this location is &illed -ith a solid o$Fect, the s%$Fect
appears in the nearest open space. Spells and a$ilities
that mo!e a creat%re -ithin a plane, s%ch as teleport or
dimension door, do not help a creat%re escape a ma9e

re4%ires concentration8. .he do%$le may $e controlled at
any distance &rom the caster, so long as the caster remains
a$le to see it.

+hen this spell is cast, it creates a 4%asi-real, $irdli5e
creat%re. /t may appear as a small ha-5G&alcon or as a
large do!e, and may $e any shade o& grey &rom nearly
-hite to nearly $lac5. /t does not &ight, $%t all normal
animals sh%n it and only monstro%s ones -ill attac5. .he
messenger has an "rmor Class o& 1B and 2 hit points,
pl%s 1 per le!el o& the caster. /& it loses all o& its hit points,
the 2essenger disappears.
.he 2essenger &lies at a mo!ement rate o& 120 &eet per
ro%nd. /t can $ear %p to one o%nce per &i!e &%ll le!els o&
the caster 6one o%nce %p to le!el C, t-o o%nces %p to
le!el 17, three o%nces &rom le!els 1? thro%gh 1C, &o%r
o%nces at le!el 208.
+hen created, the 2essenger m%st $e gi!en a speci&ic
destination, -hich can $e any location on the same plane
o& e:istence to -hich the caster has $een at least once
6e!en i& he or she -as lost at the time8. "&ter the caster
attaches any message or small item6s8 to the legs o& the
$ird, he or she releases it, and it &lies -itho%t error to the
speci&ied location.
.he caster may additionally !is%ali9e a speci&ic person,
-hom the 2essenger -ill see5 o%t near the target
location. Jote that this does not allo- location o& a
person< the 2essenger -ill &ly aro%nd the target area
loo5ing &or the target creat%re.
.he 2essenger -ill tra!el at its ma:im%m mo!ement &rom
the caster to the target location. #istance is no o$Fect< the
2essenger -ill contin%e inde&initely %ntil the target area is
reached. /& a target creat%re -as speci&ied, the 2essenger

and tail, and smo5e-colored, ins%$stantial hoo!es that
ma5e no so%nd. /t has -hat seems to $e a saddle, $it,
and $ridle. /t does not &ight, $%t animals sh%n it and
re&%se to attac5 it.
.he mo%nt has an "C o& 1B and 12 hit points. /& it loses
all its hit points, the phantom steed disappears. "
phantom steed has a speed o& 70 &eet per caster le!el. /t
can $ear its riderIs -eight and -hat he or she carries 6the
steed cannot carry saddle$ags or the li5e8.
.hese mo%nts gain additional po-ers according to the
caster=s le!el,
