The Floating Egg

Aim: To see what kind of water is denser between salt water and
fresh water, also what would happen when we put both together?
Materials:
Three eggs
Three Glasses
Water
Salt
Table spoon measurement
Method:
! "our water into the first glass until it is three #uarters
full!
$! "ut the egg into the water to see if it floats or sinks!
%! "our three #uarters of a glass of water into the se&ond
glass!
'! "la&e si( table spoons of salt into the se&ond glass and
stir, then pla&e the egg into the glass and see if it floats!
)! Fill the third glass a bit less than half of water and add
si( table spoons of salt, mi( well!
*! "our normal water in the third glass until nearl+ full
,pour &arefull+ so that +ou don-t mi( normal water with
salt water., pla&e egg in glass and see if it floats or
sinks!
/ata and 0esults :
1n the first glass with the fresh water the egg sank to the bottom
straight awa+! With the se&ond test the opposite happened and the
egg floated in the salt+ water! With the third glass, when the egg
was pla&ed inside the egg floated initiall+, sunk graduall+ and
finall+ sat in the middle of the glass!
/is&ussion:
When salt is added to water the water be&omes denser! The densit+
of water impa&ts on whether or not other items &an float on the
water! With the salt+ water, the egg is still less dense than the salt+
water whi&h enabled the egg to float! The fresh water was less
dense than the egg whi&h allowed the egg to sink! 1n our last 2ar we
put the salt water ,whi&h the egg &ould float in. and pla&ed the
normal water on top ,whi&h the egg sunk in. without mi(ing! 3oth
the salt and fresh water had the same effe&t as before but the egg
sta+ed in the middle, this happened be&ause the egg floated on the
salt water half of the bottle and sunk in the fresh water half! 1f we
appl+ this to a real life situation we &an sa+ that when we put a
boat in fresh water it would be a bit lower in the water than in the
o&ean!
4on&lusion: 1f we put this e(periment in to a real life situation we
&an sa+ that salt water is more dense than fresh water whi&h means
that ob2e&ts like boats sit low in fresh water but sits high on the
o&ean!
