Forming good relationships is important because we live and work in a world
filled with many different people and we must learn to get along with and relate to
people with different ideas, beliefs, and ways of doing things.
o Express common courtesies. Practice saying Thank you whenever you
should. Increase the number of smiles you give others. e more willing to
shake hands and say positive things to people. !reet people in the morning
with smiles and kind words. e supportive and encouraging to people who
are under stress.
o Be an active listener. e aware that nonverbal behavior communicates
the "uality of your listening. #emember that understanding the other
person is the ob$ective of careful listening. %ou must e&tend this common
courtesy to people if you are to improve your relations with people.
o Express smpath and empath when appropriate. To improve feeling
sympathy, you must observe others who show sympathy. Then, you must
practice by following their e&ample. #emember, learning to feel empathy
comes from e&perience. %ou will feel empathy for someone who is
e&periencing emotions you have e&perienced in a similar situation.

understanding of anothers situation, feelings, and motives.)
o Respond appropriatel to others. #emember to think about what you
will say before you say it. (onsider whether your remark will offend
someone or if your remark will make you look bad.
o Reciprocate sel!-disclosure. #isk revealing yourself to others who share
their feelings, attitudes, beliefs, and ideas with you. )lways assert them
appropriately and in good taste.
