T he latest European standard appli cable to the
desi gn of Vacuum cast coi l Transformer, the EN
60726 ( 2003) speci fi es a maxi mum level of par-

measured i n each and every ABB transformer.
O ur stati sti cs show that the average value
measured i s always lower than 10 pC and i n
90 % of the cases parti al di scharges are lower
than 5 pC. T hi s low level of parti al di scharge
can be granted thanks to the effi ci ent desi gn of
ABB Vacuum Cast Coi l dry transformers, to the
hi gh quali ty of the materi al used and to the most
modern encapsulati on technology.
The encapsulation process i s a fundamental
operati on i n the manufacturi ng procedure and
should be carri ed out and controlled under the
most strict conditionsin order to ensure optimum

been reached, the resi n i spoured i n the moulds.
Components are mi xed together just before the

Overload Capacity
Experi ence has shown us that a dry type trans-
former usually lasts several decades. However,
the exact fi gure i s i mpossi ble to calculate, be-
cause i t depends on the condi ti ons i t has been
exposed to.
Li fe of a dry type transformer depends speci fi -
cally on the overload suffered duri ng i ts li fe-
ti me. T hese overloads can create a fluctuati on
of temperature duri ng the wi ndi ng that degra-
des the i nsulati on because of thermi c agei ng.
However, a transformer can functi on wi th some
overloads wi thout affecti ng i ts li feti me. T hi s i s
