What is the structure of Earth?

1. Objective:
a. Students will be able to identify and describe the different layers of the earth.
b. Students will discuss how scientists are able to learn about the earth.
c. Students will be able to use this information to create a model of the earth.
2. Materials: White board, science notebook, pencil, and science book
3. STANDARD:
5.3.1.2.2- Explain how slow processes, such as water erosion, and rapid processes, such as landslides and volcanic eruptions, form features of the Earths
surface.
4. Motivation or Anticipatory Set:
a. We are going to be starting a new unit today, which talks about earths changing surface.
b. Today we are going to talk about earths structure and what it is made of.
c. Who thinks that the earth is made up of many different layers?
5. Procedure or STEPS:
We are going to read about the structure of the earth.
We will silently read before discussing what we have read.
Discuss what students read and what new knowledge they have about the earth.
We are now going to create a model in our notebooks representing the different layers of the earth.
Discuss the different ways that scientists are able to study the earth.
Show video representing the different layers of the earth.
a. Modeling/Input: Ask students engaging questions about the structure of the earth. Ask questions that make students think about the different layers of the
earth.
b. Check for Understanding: By having discussions with the class and by asking the students questions that go along with the reading but also make the
students think more in depth. If the students are able to go into detail about what we are reading on, then they have understood the content.
c. Guided Practice:
Create a model of the earth, labeling all of the different layers of the earth.
d. Independent Practice: Students will read the book independently before discussion.
e. Closure: Summarize to students that the earth is made up of many different layers.
6. Formal and Informal Assessment: I will informally assess the students knowledge on the earths structure by engaging in a discussion with them on this
topic. I will know students have met the objectives when I see that they are actively talking about the different layers of the earth. I will be able to check students
models they have drawn to see that they understand the earths layers.
