Assessment and evaluation are essential components in helping students progress in learning the teachers

progress in teaching. I believe it is crucially important for the teacher to be aware of their key ideas in assessment and
evaluation for it to be efficient and successful; it needs to be purposeful and clearly thought out, and finally practiced.
My key ideas for assessment and evaluation

Why should I assess/evaluate?
To assess where students are at in their learning- whether it is in the beginning, middle or the end of the
lesson/unit/year
To assess effects of my teaching- is my instruction having a positive outcome for the children or do I need to
modify my approach? In order to know what to teach next
To provide students with feedback
To provide other key people involved in students lives: parents, resource teachers
Who should evaluate?
The teacher
The students
o Themselves: self-evaluation
o Each other: peer evaluation
Who is the evaluation for?
The teacher- to determine course of
instruction
The students- to maximize progress of
learning

When should I assess/evaluate?
Assessment
Throughout and constantly- before, during and after a lesson
Before- to see what students know to determine what to teach
During- to see whether they are learning
After- to see whether the learning goals are met or not
Evaluate
At the end of a unit, month, term, year
o To gain a summative idea of what the students have gained/able to do as a result of the
lesson/unit/term/year
