Happy summer! As the English Department at Grand River Prep, we work to prepare your student for collegelevel reading and writing! "o that end, we have a summer reading program, re#uiring A$$ students to read three %ooks this summer! &tudents should take notes on the %ooks as they read and write and talk a%out the %ooks when school resumes! Note: &tudents taking AP English $anguage or AP English $iterature ne't year will complete different summer reading and do not need to follow these guidelines! Aside from the numerous arguments that can %e made for reading in general, there are two reasons that students are re#uired to participate in the summer reading program!
(! Summer Learning Loss. Research shows that students can lose %etween three months and one gradelevel of skill over the summer, and teachers then spend an average of si' weeks at the %eginning of the school year reteaching skills! "here are many ways that students can keep their %rains active during the summer )camps, individual math and writing practice, summer school, travel*, %ut the most readily availa%le way to keep thinking is to keep reading! +! College Readiness and AP Reading. ,any of the %ooks on the summer reading list have won %ook awards and are recogni-ed as AP#uality literature! Reading creates young adults capa%le of discussions a%out literature, %oth in high school and college! Even after these reasons, some students might ask why they should read from the re#uired %ooks on the list! "here is one more immediate reward that should motivate students! Prize Drawing. All students who meet the re#uirements for the summer reading program will receive one entry into a schoolwide drawing for pri-es! .ne of the pri-es will %e an Kindle Fire! &ee the ne't pages for a %ook list and instructions! /e ask you to encourage your student to read and to assist in finding the %ooks )some online, all in li%raries*!
